The American Revolution Activity: Writing Activity: Theories of Representation
When Britain's Parliament introduced the Stamp Act in 1765, American colonists cried foul. It was unfair, they said, an unjust economic burden. And, they added, it was unconstitutional (that whole "taxation without representation" bit).
You will be exploring this argument by examining an essay written by Thomas Whately in defense of the Stamp Act. You should prepare by reviewing the surrounding events here.
